Doc Johnson Classic Anal Plug, Large, White Reviews

Even Though It's Called "Medium," This Is A Serious Plug

Reviewer: Voiceguy, Los Angeles, CA
I have owned one of these for years, and for years never succeeded in getting the darned thing to go in. It didn't seem to matter what I did to prepare, relax, stretch, etc., I still couldn't get over that last "brick wall" where the muscle simply refused to go any further, even though the plug was only about 80% inserted.

I knew this couldn't be an absolute barrier, because the muscle ought to be able to stretch further. Although this product is daunting enough with a 1-3/4" diameter at its widest point, there are numerous other products out there (including the larger Doc Johnson Anal Plug, White, Large) that measure 2", 2-1/4", even 3" and beyond. (And believe me, those quarter-inch increments can seem like a mile when you're struggling to get them inserted!) Somebody out there is buying and using these things. There must be a way to make them work.

Before I talk about how I finally succeeded in using this plug, I want to say a word about anal plugs (a/k/a butt plugs) in general. The theory is that the wide spread of the insertion part, tapering into a much narrower shank near the base, will keep the inserted plug in place rather than allowing it to pop out while standing, sitting, walking, or engaging in bedroom activity. The reliability of insertion seems to depend on both the absolute diameter of the wide part, and the ratio between the wide part's diameter and the stem's diameter. The greater the difference, the less likely the unit is to pop out unexpectedly, despite lubrication (which is essential).

For this reason, it is my view that the "slim" anal plugs (such as the Doc Johnson Anal Plug White Small) are relatively useless and ineffective, because their small diameter and negligible taper mean that they will be ejected almost immediately, even if the wearer stays perfectly still. Natural muscle contraction will be enough. I believe you need to go to something more substantial, such as this "medium" model, in order to have any hope that the unit will stay in place. Thus, getting this size of plug to insert is not just a matter of mastering some kind of abstract size challenge; it is the basic precondition of experiencing a plug's intended function at all.

What I discovered is that it required a much more graduated approach to work up to this unit. Previously I had been using a 1" device to prepare and attempt to relax and stretch the muscle. This proved inadequate, and the jump to 1-3/4" was just too much.

The answer proved to be the Tantus Ripple Large Anal Plug, Midnight Purple, also available as Tantus Ripple Large Anal Plug, Electric Blue and Tantus Ripple Large Anal Plug, Pink Pearl. This unit has a series of increasing diameter bulbs, starting at 7/8" and ending at 1-1/2". It took a few tries over successive days to get the 1-1/2" bulb to go in. Once that happened reliably, the step to this plug -- at 1-3/4" -- was no big deal.

Thus, anyone considering this plug -- unless they already have experience with something this size -- should seriously consider equipping themselves with something else that will allow them to work up to this unit. I happen to like the Tantus devices a lot, because they are comfortable and easy to care for, but there are other products that should accomplish the same thing.

I can tell you that once this plug goes in, it ain't goin' nowhere. It fits very comfortably, and any muscle contraction appears to draw it in rather than tending to expel it. The wide base keeps it from getting drawn entirely inside. I have found that you almost have to remind yourself that it's in there, because the very smooth surface doesn't create any friction or irritation. I was not bothered by the external base at all.

I had some trepidation on the first occasion it came time to remove the unit, fearing a repeat of the "brick wall" in the other direction. Fortunately, however, that didn't seem to be a problem. Evidently having this inserted keeps the muscle sufficiently limber.

I don't know whether I will always have to go through the ritual of preparing with the Tantus plug before inserting this one, or will someday learn to go directly to a state of sufficient relaxation to allow this one to go in with only moderate preparation. (They do say that practice makes perfect!) In all events it seems doubtful to me that I will ever seek to move beyond this one in size, as its performance is everything I am interested in.

This plug's classic design has been around for more than 30 years, and it has certainly stood the test of time. My extended discussion here is provided in hopes that others will not experience disappointment or frustration when faced with the challenge of using this plug for the first time. When used properly, it does exactly what it sets out to do.

UPDATE: I decided to order the 2008 version of this plug to compare with the one I have owned for years. Here is what I found:

* The 2008 version is slightly narrower at its widest point -- 1-5/8" rather than 1-3/4" -- but that is still plenty big enough. The height is about the same: 5-1/2" total, 4-3/4" insertable.

* The product is now made with a more resilient and rubbery plastic resin, as opposed to the vinyl (or something like vinyl) used in my vintage plug. This seems like an improvement to me, as the tip will probably have an easier time bending to conform to internal areas.

* The base is much beefier in today's version. It is both thicker and wider. This is not such a good thing, as it makes wearing the plug somewhat less comfortable. I'm assuming there was a reason for this, and will say that it is not so uncomfortable as to be intolerable. I'm wondering if there is a way to shave down the width somewhat, because that would improve things a lot.

All in all, however, I would not change anything I said in the original review (other than to correct the width dimension I gave). This is the classic plug, and it works well once you figure out how to get it in. Because of the comfort issue associated with the base, anyone considering long-term wear might want to look at the slightly smaller (and more expensive) Tantus Ryder Anal Plug, Midnight Purple, which features a more comfortable base.
Be Warned -- This Thing Is A Whopper

"You've got to be kidding."

That's the only rational reaction to seeing this enormous anal plug.

Standing about 5-1/2" high (5" insertable), it measures 2-1/4" in diameter at its widest point. That's more than half an inch wider than the Doc Johnson Anal Plug White Medium, which itself is a formidable challenge to insert. This "large" plug is really, seriously, large.

The material is a squeezy plastic that has some give and flexibility. The base has a footprint of 2" x 3-1/4" which may not be particularly comfortable to wear for any length of time. On the other hand, anyone who can manage to get this monster inserted may not be concerned about a minor bit of irritation from the base.

This would definitely be something to work up to, and even then only for someone who wants a serious challenge. I would urge anyone reading this to make sure they can comfortably accommodate the medium sized plug before even thinking about this one! It is a doozy.

UPDATE (April 2009): I have now succeeded in inserting this massive device, confirming that it actually can be done. The necessary step in working up to this one was becoming sufficiently comfortable with the 1.85" Tantus Severin Medium Anal Plug, Black. I was never convinced that I would succeed with that one, either, but patience, persistence, and relaxation paid off, and I reached a point of being able to insert it without major problems. it's still big enough that you absolutely know it's there! But it definitely becomes easier with practice.

Now, after warming up with the Severin medium plug (and becoming relaxed enough to be able to insert it and remove it repeatedly in a session), I can get this Doc Johnson monster in.

I'm convinced that part of the initial resistance to something this big is psychological, and that a major factor in success is having the right mental state to let the muscle relax and resist the urge to clamp shut in opposition to the intrusion. But I've also learned that with these larger plugs, it makes a big difference what angle of insertion is being used. It's worth testing different ones. It can also help to rock the device a bit whie inserting in order to jockey it in. Above all, though, it cannot be forced -- there must not be pain. The muscle must agree to admit it, despite the strange and unfamiliar feeling of something this size. If the muscle decides it is simply not ready, even after a reasonable effort at persuasion, then it's better to try again another time. Patience and persistence do pay off -- and I can tell you that the feeling when the largest diameter part finally slides in is exquisite and well worth the wait.

One thing I noticed with this unit it that it is long enough, once fully inserted, that the tip will press against some things inside that are not used to being pressed. It wasn't overly uncomfortable, but I could imagine a slight dull ache developing after a period of time. I suspect different people will have different experiences in this regard.

Now the only question for me is whether I will stop here, or go on to an even greater challenge, such as the Tantus Severin Large Anal Plug, Black. That unit is 2.35" in diameter at its largest point, and because its silicone material has far less give than the squeezy Doc Johnson material, the effective difference will seem even greater.
Oh so big

Reviewer: A. Chin,
Was much larger than expected for just a medium. Small was too small though. Tough to use at first, but after a little bit, was great. Highly recommended. Going to get a large soon most likely. Don't even want to fathom the size of that one.

A good friend ordered this for me off of my wish list on a Friday and Monday morning it showed up at my front door. My husband woke me up with a large grin and handed me the box. This plug is for me to use while I do my household chores as part of my training, I am his submissive. As other reviewers have commented, it is a bit bigger than you would expect from the picture or for a "medium" but I am not sorry. The small looks way to small compared to this. I would prefer the base be a bit different as it "pinches" slightly along the cheeks after you start walking around but I figure over time we could always take a craft knife and trim the square edges down. I have had anal sex a few times and played with a few fingers but have not been stretched very much and was able to get this in on second try. My suggestion would be to lube it, or use your own lubrication if you are a female, and ease it in, once you get over the widest point then spread your legs (works best if you sit on a toilet with the lid down) and wiggle a bit to get it firmly in place, then go about your business. I look forward to trying sex with this in as well. I would have given it 5 stars but gave 4 instead because of wide square base and the fact that the neither the page nor the packaging has the actual measurements for this plug and that would have been helpful.

Just Right

Reviewer: C. Pool,
I was intimidated by the size of this plug when I first saw it, but I've had nothing but good experiences with Doc Johnson products so I tried it. The soft material is flexible and was no problem to use, even for a beginner like me. Big enough to not slip out but small enough to be comfortable for just about anyone. Great, high quality product that's easy to clean. Just don't forget the lube.
PLUG OF PLEASURE

I have to say that this toy was a bit intimidating at first, it is large and sleek, but I loved it right off the bat. The shape and material that is used to make this is perfect. Easy to clean and having a little flexibility, my partner and I are very happy with this purchase, and the price was perfect!!!!!
Great Item

Can't wait to get to the large now!

Reviewer: Teri Smith, Tx
I was a little weary when my husband said he wanted me to have one. Concerned about stretching a place that I didn't want to stay stretched. Now I feel a little silly, regular keagles keep all the lowers tightened up, didn't know it was the same for the bottom. This little guy has increased back-door stimulation incredibly!
Not bad

Reviewer: A. Chin,
Smller than expected. Would slip out too often. But nice product.

Base larger than it should be

Reviewer: chibosgrl21, Chicago, IL USA
I love this. It slides in with the proper amount of lube and while the part right before the neck is sometimes a challenge it does eventually go in. Gives a great feeling and is fine for long term. The only problem is that when you're behind is, well, not small the rectangular base can make it uncomfortable. I wish the base were a little thinner but other than that I do love it. Ps: relatively new to anal play.
Wife loves it.

Reviewer: a guy in U.S.A., Chesapeake Bay, USA
It is surprisingly large but if you use lots of lube and ease it in it will work great. Cleans up real easy.
WoW!

Reviewer: M. VanVickle,
This is a very large plug. I had a bit of difficulty getting it in and when it was in I felt every centimeter of it. Its too long in my opinion for daily wear. This product should mainly be used for sex play and then taken out. The base is also a bit too large, the corners tend to stab the buttocks. Definately not for beginners!
perfect size

Reviewer: Michele C., Orlando, FL
It takes a little while to get it inserted, use lots of lube! It's ok for a some what experienced person, I think it might be better to start with something smaller if you are new to this type of thing.

Fills you up and is comfortable

Reviewer: Culture Queen, Washington, DC
I've had a few different plugs over the years. If too small, they won't stay inserted and if too large, they take a lot of work to insert.

This plug is terrific. You need lots of lube and some relaxation by inserting smaller items first and/or going slowly, but as it enters you definitely know it is entering and you feel it while its there. Best of all, it stays where it belongs. I highly recommend this product, especially for advanced beginners and moderates.
Very Large for a Medium

Reviewer: J. Centers,
Product works just fine but very intimidating to your partner. It is big. Suggest the small version before going to this. Probably not the best choice for a first timer but a very good choice for the experienced and relaxed.
Quality toy at a good price

Reviewer: AMJ, California
Smooth, well-made, and easy to clean. Sturdy, but not stiff. My only complaint was that the base was particularly wide - but I've since learned that Doc Johnson makes a 'Slim' model, with a narrower base, which I'd recommend if you intend to use this toy for a longer period of time, or if you have a plus-sized rear end. Over all this is well worth the money, and we recommend it.
Whoa Momma!!!

Reviewer: AverageJoe, USA
The jump from the Doc Johnson small to medium is enormous! This thing is huge!! As a beginner I will not be attempting this for some time. The product is well made and seems to have a softer outer case covering a stiffer inner core. I has a nice "give" when you squeeze it. The item has a strange odor however (before using it, lol) kind of a chemical/rubber smell. Not really a big deal, as I am sure it will go away after being out of the package for a while.
Very good but...

Reviewer: ThisGuy, USA
This is the first anal plug I've ever bought but its a fairly good one with some slight short comings. It's soft and flexible so it can bend a little so it doesn't hurt. Its nice and smooth so its easy to go in and stays put.

My one problem with this is that the bottom stand part is to big, so when its inserted it starts to hurt your cheeks. If your bent over it shouldn't be noticeable but if your standing or in a position where your cheeks aren't spread its going to be uncomfortable.

Perhaps if you cut the bottom part so that its thinner it'll be more flexible and wont hurt.

Once this is plugs inserted it stays put, even if it feels like it might come out it doesn't. This doesn't mean its hard to take out, just give it a little tug and it slides out.

On a personal note: I was expecting this plugs widest part to be bigger. Even though I'm a little new to anal play this plug was easy to insert. I would recommend a larger version to anyone who's trying to decide between medium and large.
Perfect size for a beginner

Reviewer: AverageJoe, USA
This is a great little plug. It provides adequate sensation and no discomfort for the beginner. I don't know about the reviewers that state they couldn't feel it. Perhaps they need a little more fiber in their diet. This does tend to pop out easily, but that is not that big of a deal to me. The only downside I found was the funny odor the item had (before use, lol) kind of a chemical/rubber smell. I am sure it will dissapate after being out of the package for a while so I am not concerneed about it.
I like it. Perfect size.

Just received my plug. I imagined it to be much bigger. This is going to be my warm up for the Ass of Spade I'm expecting next week. I have used various plugs, some larger than this one but one thing I've never done is leave it in for a duration of time. It only took me about 5 - 8 minutes to get it in. After reading, I decided to leave it in while I cleaned up and did my homework (and type this out.) At first, I could only keep it in for about 30 seconds. I have a small and was loosening up the other day. I think this is a perfect size as I start to leave it in. It has been a while that I use a large plug and the first pop was very nice. It feels great when I walk. I'll see how long I can keep it in and work my way up and then... I get my Spade. I can't wait. As for this plug --- it's very nice.
Smaller than I expected...

Reviewer: AnalExaminer89,
I received this product in the mail today, and I couldn't wait to try it out! I was expecting something much bigger! After reading the reviews, I thought this product was going to be rather large. It took no effort to insert, and I could barely feel it once inside, except for the extra wide base. The shape of this plug is great, and it stays in place wonderfully. I am looking forward to upgrading to the Large. That will probably be a good size. This medium one will be my "warm-up" for the large. Not bad, for the good price. I would buy this brand again.

I enjoy anal play but this particular butt plug was not comfortable at all. The large width at the bottom is just too big. It came exactly as described but you cannot appreciate the large size until you see it in person. I would not recommend this butt plug to my girlfriends. I do have a smaller one that I really like.

Fulfilling

Reviewer: Gift Recipient, baltimore md
This is easy to clean. The manufacture was avg, the base has a slight gap between the filler plastic and the outter base that I had to fix with rubber cement. It fills you up, and stays in place a little less good than others of this type. I think the pinched in neck at the base should be thinner and the flare of the very base that stays external should be more solid and a tad larger to keep it out and from bending and sliping in ...
Took a little work...

Yes. The reviews are correct. This is rather large. Once it was in, however, it was great!

After reading the reviews, I opted to go with the small. Glad I did because it is plenty big enough! My partner and I are just starting to experiment with anal play and I think anything bigger would not have assisted us in our quest. We want to start SLOOWW. I like the smoothness of this one, and with a little lube, it fits nicely. Just the right size until we decide to move on to the next level.

What everyone else has said sums it up quite perfectly (besides it being too big because it really isn't that large at all - just take your time). However, you must not let this toy touch UR3 toys for extended periods of time as the UR3 will leach the water from the outer material and make it very hard. I don't know if this makes the toy unsafe or not but it is unfortunate if you don't want it to happen. You have been warned.

Reviewer: J. Demeo,
it's awsome but way bigger than i expected so it's just sitting in the back of the drawer lol.

Reviewer: Y. Ding,
Another masterpiece by Doc Johnson. It is made of smooth vinyl rubber and smell good. Size wise it should fit well for most people.
Does nothing at all

The picture does not look like the unit received, the actual unit has very little taper and therefore does not stay in at all. At that point it is pretty much worthless.
